AIA presents 2016 Library Building Awards, Housing Awards

by Brianna Crandall — April 20, 2016—The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently announced seven recipients for the 2016 AIA / ALA Library Building Awards as well as 10 for its 2016 Housing Awards, demonstrating current trends and best practices in building design. The projects are listed below.

2016 AIA / ALA Library Building Awards

The AIA and the American Library Association (ALA) selected seven projects to receive the 2016 AIA / ALA Library Building Awards, developed to encourage and recognize excellence in the architectural design of libraries. As the traditional role of libraries evolves, the designs of these community spaces have changed to reflect the needs of the surrounding community, points out the AIA, as represented by this year’s recipients:

  • Chicago Public Library, Chinatown Branch, Chicago, IL; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
  • Hennepin County Walker Library, Minneapolis, MN; VJAA

  • Renton Public Library, Renton, WA; The Miller Hull Partnership
  • Ryerson University Student Learning Centre, Toronto, ON, Canada; Snøhetta and Zeidler Partnership Architects
  • Sawyer Library, Williamstown, MA; Bohlin Cywinski Jackson

2016 Housing Awards

The AIA also selected 10 recipients for the 2016 Housing Awards. The program, now in its 16th year, was established to recognize the best in housing design and promote the importance of good housing as a necessity of life.

The jury recognized projects in four award categories, although none were selected this year for the One- and Two-Family Production Housing category.

One- and Two-Family Custom Residences (outstanding designs for custom and remodeled homes for specific client/s):

  • Hog Pen Creek Retreat, Austin, TX; Lake | Flato Architects
  • Independence Pass Residence, Aspen, CO; Bohlin Cywinski Jackson
  • Island Residence, Honolulu, HI; Bohlin Cywinski Jackson
  • Newberg Residence, Newberg, OR; Cutler Anderson Architects
  • Oak Ridge House, Jackson, MS; Duvall Decker Architects, P.A.

Multifamily Housing (apartment and condominium design, including both high- and low-density projects for public and private clients; in addition to building design, the jury assessed the integration of the building/s into their context, including open and recreational space, transportation options, and features that contribute to livable communities):

  • 1180 Fourth Street, San Francisco, CA; Mithun
  • Cloverdale749, Los Angeles, CA; Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects

Specialized Housing (outstanding design of housing that meets the unique needs of other specialized housing types such as single room occupancy residences, independent living for the disabled, residential rehabilitation programs, domestic violence shelters, and others):

  • Commonwealth Honors College, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA; William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc.
  • Homeless Veterans Transitional Housing, VA Campus, Los Angeles, CA; LEO A DALY
