by Brianna Crandall — July 29, 2016 — The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) has selected the recipients of the AIA/AAH National Healthcare Design Awards program. The award program showcases what is considered the best healthcare building design and healthcare design-oriented research. Projects exhibit conceptual strengths that solve aesthetic, civic, urban, and social concerns as well as the requisite functional and sustainability concerns of a hospital.
Category B winner the Christ Hospital Joint and Spine Center by SOM is a model for future hospitals with its flexible design and commitment to sustainability, and is LEED certified.
Recipients were selected in four different categories, as indicated below. The winning projects of the 2016 AIA/AAH National Healthcare Design Awards are:
Category A: Built, Less than $25 million in construction cost
- Kaiser Permanente, Kraemer Radiation Oncology Center, Anaheim, CA; Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design
- Planned Parenthood Queens: Diane L. Max Health Center, Queens, NY; Stephen Yablon Architecture
Category B: Built, More than $25 million in construction cost
- Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Regional Ambulatory Cancer Center, West Harrison, NY; EwingCole
- The Christ Hospital Joint and Spine Center, Cincinnati, OH; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
- The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ; ZGF Architects LLP
- University Medical Center New Orleans, New Orleans, LA; NBBJ
Category C: Unbuilt, Must be commissioned for compensation by a client with the authority and intention to build

Category D: Innovations in Planning and Design Research, Built and Unbuilt
