by Brianna Crandall — May 13, 2015—Inspired by years of research about students’ preferred study environments, AGATI Furniture recently launched its Pod workstation, which will debut at the ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco in June. Designed to create total comfort and noise reduction for those wanting individual study space without distractions, Pod’s side entrance, integrated seat and upholstered panels establish a safe haven for increased focus overtraditional study carrels that expose the back of the user.

Materials chosen to minimize distraction

For a contemporary take on the traditional study carrel, AGATI used materials that minimize distractions in designing Pod. The upholstered surrounding panels absorb sound from both inside and outside of Pod, which lead to greater noise reduction when compared to traditional wood orother hard surface panels.

Pod’s integrated seat is not only designed for superior comfort, but is also positioned at a right angle to encourage an upright posture while studying. Most experts agree that the optimal studying position is having both feet flat on the floor and knees bent 90 degrees. Pod’s design makes sure this seating position is easily and comfortably achieved.

Privacy in front and back

Perhaps Pod’s most unique aspect is its back privacy. The side entrance allows for the surrounding wall to completely cover the user’s back so wandering eyes cannot see laptop or tablet screens. Beyond aesthetics, the design creates a sense of safety that allows students to worry less about their surroundings and more about the task at hand.

Looking forward when seated in Pod, the user’s line of sight is directed towards the desk table and the front surround wall, minimizing distractions caught in the corner of the user’s eyes. A slight backward leaning motion, however, allows the user to easily see out of the side entrance and enjoy the macro environment.

A focal point and flexible solution

With its curvy lines and stylish architecture, Pod undoubtedly stands outs in an environment of furniture that typically has a traditional look, notes the company.

Beyond aesthetics, Pod is also functional and versatile. It creates cost-effective, private study spaces without building permanent walls. The winding S-shape design, when multiple Pods are configured together, means a smaller space footprint while maximizing the amount of individual study areas. Facilities managers can also move Pod to any part of a building where private study space is needed.

Pod offers power options for laptops and other devices, and the outlets are placed at accessible points so users need not crawl around on the floor to access electricity.
