Fenway Has A New Green Monster
Excel Dryer hits a grand slam for the Red Sox with the installation of the original, patented, high-speed and energy-efficient hand dryer — The XLERATOR.

The ‘Green Monster’ took on an entirely new meaning at the iconic Fenway Park, the oldest and arguably most historic baseball venue in America, when the Red Sox started a partnership with the internationally-renowned environmental group, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The thirty-seven foot, two-inch high wall dominating left field is the highest among current Major League Baseball fields and has earned its monstrous title by blocking homeruns from baseball legends since the park’s original construction in 1912. The Green Monster may have received its nickname in 1947 when it was first painted green, but the 2008 season made it a symbol for the Red Sox who launched the Fenway Greening initiative with NRDC to explore environmentally sustainable habits and technologies.

“As stewards of such a storied venue, we recognize our unique position and ability to raise public consciousness about important issues. Our decision to enhance the ballpark’s environmental attributes is one born out of a sense of personal responsibility and professional duty,” said Tom Werner, Boston Red Sox Chairman. “For us, this announcement marks some of the first steps in an ongoing process to make America’s most beloved and oldest ballpark also one of America’s greenest.”

” The installation of XLERATOR® hand dryers was a significant factor in reducing our overall waste removal from the park by over 123 tons this year, which equates to a 24 percent reduction in waste compared to the same time last year … Our first season with XLERATOR® hand dryers installed in Fenway’s restrooms isn’t even over yet, but the annual savings compared to paper towels is clearly substantial.”

Red Sox Manager, Facility Planning and Services

” Fenway Greening is our unique facility management plan to adopt the most sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies like XLERATOR® … It’s all about identifying areas for improvement and executing solutions with the best green products the industry has to offer. The environmental savings XLERATOR® provides Fenway Park was enough to make the switch away from paper and the cost-savings is ‘icing on the cake.'”
— Jon Lister,
Fenway Director of Facilities Management

” The restrooms are less congested now because we used to have a problem with clogged toilets and urinals due to improper disposal of paper towels … Now that paper towels have been eliminated from the restrooms, plumbing problems are almost non-existent.”
— Roy Contreras,
Senior Custodial Manager for Aramark

” The iconic left field wall is not the only ‘green monster’ at Fenway anymore … The XLERATOR® high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryer is a figurative green monster that is helping the Red Sox achieve their environmentally sustainable goals through Fenway Greening while also contributing to other main objectives: reducing costs, labor and maintenance while improving the parks appearance and fan experience.”

Excel Dryer’s Vice President of Marketing

Within the last five years, over three-hundred million dollars has been invested in renovating the park and it can be seen in many different ways, from additional seating atop the Green Monster and new suites, to the EMC Club and structural improvements behind the scenes. Fenway Greening renovations include solar thermal panels that are used to heat a third of the water used at the park, recycling and composting efforts initiated by culinary staff and energy-efficient LED lighting.

“Sustainability is a passion of mine,” said Chris Knight, Red Sox Manager, Facility Planning and Services. “The combination of finance and environmental responsibility requires pushing the envelope to find optimum levels of efficiency, which is why we sought out thought leaders like Excel Dryer who are innovating new ways to help us in our greening initiatives.”

Excel Dryer’s XLERATOR® dries hands three times faster (completely in 10-15 seconds) and uses 80 percent less energy than conventional hand dryers. XLERATOR® represents a 95 percent cost savings when compared to paper towels, reduces the need for labor and maintenance and eliminates their waste while improving restroom hygiene.

As part of Fenway Greening, a total of 100 of Excel Dryer’s high-speed, energy-efficient XLERATOR® hand dryers were installed in Fenway’s busiest restrooms in time for opening day 2013. Over thirty-seven thousand ticketed fans and two thousand staff members are in attendance for sold-out home games and Red Sox Nation regularly makes a habit of filling the stands. They also, however, made a habit of filling up trash receptacles in Fenway’s restrooms. The facility was spending an average of almost $57,000 on paper towels each year, not to mention the cost of maintenance and waste removal. “The installation of XLERATOR® hand dryers was a significant factor in reducing our overall waste removal from the park by over 123 tons this year, which equates to a 24 percent reduction in waste compared to the same time last year,” said Knight. “Our first season with XLERATOR® hand dryers installed in Fenway’s restrooms isn’t even over yet, but the annual savings compared to paper towels is clearly substantial.”

A customized cost-savings analysis revealed that XLERATOR® hand dryers reduced Fenway Park’s carbon footprint by 82 percent. To put that data into perspective, an 82 percent reduction in Fenway’s carbon footprint saved approximately 560 trees, 100 cubic meters in landfill space, 657,724 gallons of water and emissions from almost 620 gallons of gasoline per year.

“Fenway Greening is our unique facility management plan to adopt the most sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies like XLERATOR®,” said Jon Lister, Fenway Director of Facilities Management. “It’s all about identifying areas for improvement and executing solutions with the best green products the industry has to offer. The environmental savings XLERATOR® provides Fenway Park was enough to make the switch away from paper and the cost-savings is ‘icing on the cake.'”

With the installation of XLERATOR® hand dryers, Fenway’s cost-savings is, in fact, substantial. Replacing paper towels with high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryers as part of the Fenway Greening initiative was a simple change with both instant and lasting results. XLERATOR® hand dryers will save the park over $83,000 annually, a 97 percent savings versus the cost of paper towels, with a return on investment in just over 12 months including installation costs. In addition to the monetary and environmental benefits, the facility maintenance staff boasts that XLERATOR® has streamlined workflow and dramatically improved the fan experience.

Aramark is a corporate partner of Fenway Park and they support both concessions and facility maintenance. “I would say XLERATOR® provides a tremendous amount of savings compared to paper towels,” said Roy Contreras, Senior Custodial Manager for Aramark. “The staff says that before the high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryers were installed, a busy game day was like a tornado hit the park. We are very appreciative for how much XLERATOR® dryers are helping us do a better job and keep Fenway clean, and I can’t imagine the place without them anymore.”

Before XLERATOR® hand dryers were installed in Fenway’s restrooms, they had an average of six to eight trash receptacles requiring heavy maintenance throughout a game. Now that high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryers are being used by patrons, the park’s restrooms have a single trash receptacle and facility staff can focus on more important things than keeping up with the maintenance needs created by paper towels. In years past, it took an average of three to five minutes for a facility employee to arrive at the scene of a spill… and with an enthusiastic fan base like Red Sox Nation, spills are a frequent occurrence. “Now that our staff isn’t running around stocking, filling and removing paper towel waste or fixing broken paper towel dispensers, we are responding to spills in 30 to 90 seconds and preventing slips and falls,” said Contreras. The adoption of high-speed, energyefficient hand dryer technology has alleviated a time-consuming burden from facility management staff so they can spend more time positively impacting the fan experience with improved morale. And the fans are happy. “The restrooms are less congested now because we used to have a problem with clogged toilets and urinals due to improper disposal of paper towels,” said Contreras. “Now that paper towels have been eliminated from the restrooms, plumbing problems are almost non-existent.”

“Sometimes it’s good not to hear anything from the fans… from a facility maintenance perspective. That means they are enjoying the game and things are working as they should.” added Knight. In addition to faster response rates for slips and falls, facility maintenance staff are helping fans find their seats and finding time for tasks like removing graffiti to enhance the park aesthetic. Facility maintenance staff is able to do more, with less demand for human resources. XLERATOR® hand dryers are not only helping Fenway reduce costs associated with waste removal, but the park has been able to reduce other costs too, like labor. “We were able to trim down the amount of time it takes to prep and clean the park, but also the amount of people it takes to keep Fenway clean and hygienic,” said Contreras. Unlike several paper towel dispensers, XLERATOR® hand dryers operate with motion sensors that are touchfree and help prevent the spread of germs.

XLERATOR® is now available with a full line of accessories, including the only Certified HEPA Filtration System with a washable pre-filter for reliable performance and a longer life span, a noise reduction nozzle, antimicrobial wall guards and the XChanger® paper towel dispenser retrofit kit. XLERATOR® is also the only hand dryer to be MADE IN USA Certified, the first hand dryer to be GreenSpec® Listed and helps facilities qualify for LEED® credits. XLERATOR® helps commercial facilities save time, money and the environment.

“The iconic left field wall is not the only ‘green monster’ at Fenway anymore,” said Excel Dryer’s Vice President of Marketing, William Gagnon. “The XLERATOR® high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryer is a figurative green monster that is helping the Red Sox achieve their environmentally sustainable goals through Fenway Greening while also contributing to other main objectives: reducing costs, labor and maintenance while improving the parks appearance and fan experience.”
