by Brianna Crandall — May 27, 2016 — The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and Alessi, “the Italian Factory of Design,” recently announced Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos as the Best of Competition winner, from among a field of “exceptional” design projects, of the 4th annual IIDA Best Interiors of Latin America and the Caribbean Competition for its Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

Judges said the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen, which was also the winner of the Spas / Fitness Centers / Gymnasium category, “showcases modern design that retains an inviting and intimate atmosphere,” and that it stood out with its use of “organic elements and rich materials,” and that it “truly feels like a relaxing oasis that plays off of its lush surroundings.”

The Best of Competition winner was announced on May 11 during the Maison&Objet Americas event in Miami, Florida, where all of the competition winners were celebrated. The competition recognizes and celebrates interior design / architecture projects that reflect the highest level of creativity, originality, and design excellence from Latin America and the Caribbean Islands.

Judges said this year’s winners “emphasize the role of local inspiration and cultural context with sophisticated, globally-relevant design.” Photos of winning projects and a complete list of the winners can be viewed on the IIDA Web site and will be published in an upcoming issue of Contract magazine.
