Looking for more insight into your air movement and control systems? These publications can help.

by Brianna Crandall — May 1, 2017 — For those who need to know more about the air movement and control systems in their facilities, the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International just announced the launch of a brand-new standard for fan system efficiency and an updated application manual for air curtains.

Fan System Efficiency and Fan System Input Power Calculation

ANSI/AMCA Standard 207-17, Fan System Efficiency and Fan System Input Power Calculation was approved this month by AMCA membership and the American National Standards Institute.

Fan system standard cover

ANSI/AMCA Standard 207-17 provides a method to estimate the input power and overall efficiency of an extended fan system.

ANSI/AMCA Standard 207-17 provides a method to estimate the input power and overall efficiency of an extended fan system. An extended fan system is composed of a fan and an electric motor but may also include a transmission and a motor controller. While direct measurement of fan system performance is preferred, the large number of fan system configurations often makes testing impractical, notes the trade association.

This standard offers a standardized method to estimate fan system performance by modeling commonly used components. Calculations reported in accordance with this standard offer fan users a tool to compare alternative fan system configurations in a consistent and uniform manner. This document does not provide selection guidance. Users must assure that selected components have sufficient capacity and are configured to produce the desired results.

Michael Brendel, AMCA 207 committee chair, stated:

AMCA 207 offers a standardized method to estimate fan system power consumption and efficiency. It provides the fan industry and the engineering community with a consistent means to compare multiple fan system configurations when test data are not available.

Application Manual for Air Curtains

AMCA also announced the revision of AMCA Publication 222-16, Application Manual for Air Curtains.

ACU manual cover

AMCA Publication 222 is an application guide meant to familiarize the reader with air curtain unit (ACU) technology.

AMCA Publication 222 is an application guide meant to familiarize the reader with air curtain unit (ACU) technology. It covers ACU theory, construction, performance standards, applications, benefits, selection, installation, commissioning, service and maintenance. A redline version showing what has changed will soon be available.

Both publications are available at the AMCA Store, with a 50% discount for AMCA members with log-in. Licenses for more than one person can be purchased while checking out.
