Think synthetic turf is just for sports? New installation shows its versatility

by Brianna Crandall — April 24, 2017 — For most collegians, the sporting experience is more about fun with friends than Final Fours. According to synthetic turf systems provider AstroTurf, Grand Canyon University understands that as much as any school, which is why they’re getting ready to install their fourth AstroTurf field on campus in the last two years — all geared for recreational use by the students at large.

The newest installation, a 23,000-square-foot synthetic turf surface, is intended for students to use whether they’re catching Frisbees or catching some rays. Canyon Field will feature AstroTurf’s Rhino Blend product. By combining slit film and high micron fibers into one system, the Rhino Blend turf offers the durability required for heavy use and an aesthetically pleasing presence to accentuate the campus surroundings — a plus in this dry desert terrain.

Grand Canyon University is getting ready to install its fourth AstroTurf field on campus in the last two years — all geared for recreational use by the students at large.

The team at General Acrylics, a certified AstroTurf distributor, will handle this project. Installation is slated to begin at the end of March with completion due before April is out.

Troy Squires, president of AstroTurf, stated:

The benefits of artificial turf aren’t limited to the football stadium. Municipal parks and campus rec fields can also enjoy the reduced water consumption, durability, and vibrant appearance of Astroturf.

Canyon Field joins a growing list of recreational playgrounds at GCU that feature AstroTurf surfaces. Groves Field and Prescott Field, both installed in 2015, feature AstroTurf’s 3D3 product and are used primarily for intramural athletics. Colter Field became a part of the GCU campus in 2016. It boasts over 190,000 square feet of AstroTurf Rhino Blend turf, with lines for lacrosse as well as baseball and softball.

According to AstroTurf, more and more colleges and universities are turning to its synthetic turf systems for surfacing their recreational and intramural fields of play. Low maintenance, high performance under heavy use, and improved aesthetics have all been cited as reasons that schools like Ohio State, Texas A&M, Duke, and many more have turned to AstroTurf for their large-scale rec field needs.

AstroTurf offers advanced, state-of-the-art, multi-sport and specialized synthetic turf systems with proprietary engineered technologies. High schools, colleges, professional sports teams and municipalities select AstroTurf-branded products for their premium quality, technical superiority and safety.
