NeoCon ’04: Among 65 awards, Metro’s Topo alternative office wins as Best of Competition

June 16, 2004—Metro’s alternative office Topo, a furniture system with the flexibility to fit how and where you work—for the open plan and the private office, took top award as The Best of Competition, in the 15th annual Best of NeoCon ’04, as well as a Gold in the Alternative Office Category. The Best of Neocon’04 was held during June at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago. Sponsors of the prestigious product and furnishings competition are Contract Magazine, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., The International Interior Design Association (IIDA), The International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and McMorrow Report.com.

Designed by the Metro Design Group, Topo is unlike casegoods, desking, or panel-based systems with sets of rules and countless components. Manufacturer Metro adds that Topo’s pioneering system easily flexes to fit workspaces and individual work modes.

Flex-fit walls feature unlimited adjustment within an 18-in. range to increase or decrease worksetting size without additional components, which reduces inventory. Worksurfaces flex-to-fit 18-inches laterally and 3 inches vertically to accommodate changing footprints, human scale, and individual preferences.

Free standing storage, worksurface components and lounge seating are shared between open plan and private office applications to simplify inventory management and create visual compatibility between workspaces.

Topo has overhead storage oriented vertically to open up sightlines and increase ambient light. Worksurfaces are stacked pull-out surfaces. Varying heights for storage and space division elements create compelling compositions of layers and levels with spaces in-between.

Workspaces can be opened or closed by sliding window screens between desks and roller screens between workstations to facilitate collaboration or concentration.

One small kit of parts simplifies specification, installation, reconfiguration, and inventory management.
