by Brianna Crandall — March 21, 2016—The winners of the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) Awards 2016 were announced at a recent ceremony in London during the Ecobuild show.
The winners were drawn from highest scoring buildings in 2015 — certified under the BREEAM methods for assessing building sustainability — and are said to include many of the most innovatively sustainable buildings in the U.K. and countries across Europe.

The awards cover a variety of sectors including residential, retail, industrial education and health care as well as project types such as new build, refurbishment and in use.
The winning buildings and categories are:
- Education and Healthcare: The Enterprise Centre, University of East Anglia, U.K.
- Industrial: ECOstyle Warehouse, Oosterwolde, the Netherlands
- Mixed Use and Other Buildings: Five Pancras Square, London Borough of Camden, U.K.
- Office In-Use: ABN AMRO Headquarters, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
- Office New Construction: The Edge, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
- Office Refurbishment and Fit-Out: Noda, Coca-Cola France, Paris, France
- Residential: Courtauld Road, London, U.K.
- Retail In-Use: Kanyon, Istanbul, Turkey
- Retail New Construction: Torsplan, Stockholm, Sweden
Additional awards presented:
- Your BREEAM Award (public choice): OVG Real Estate for The Edge in Amsterdam, the Netherlands
- BREEAM Assessor Company of the Year: Grontmij
- Assessors of the Year: James Warne, Boom Collective; Kartik Amrania, Grontmij; and Magdalena Krause, CH2M Hill
- BREEAM New Talent Award (inaugural): PhD student at University of Reading Mitchell Curtis
Speaking at the awards, BREEAM Director Gavin Dunn said:
These awards embrace a range of property types, developed for very different budgets, business drivers and locations. But the inspirational projects have a common aim: they are all delivering sustainable value. Property investors and owners are seeing improved return on investment and reduced operating costs. Occupants are enjoying healthier, more comfortable indoor environments and more productive workplaces. Our environment benefits from these projects’ responsible use of natural resources. These are quite simply better properties to buy, own, live and work in. Congratulations to all winners and to all those shortlisted.
