IREM kicks off Ethics Awareness Month with ethics case studies

by Brianna Crandall — September 23, 2016 — The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) and its network of 92 chapters across the United States and around the world are highlighting their commitment to ethics and integrity with the declaration of September as the official IREM Ethics Awareness Month, along with the release of an ethics case study publication and other activities.

According to IREM, professional ethics is a cornerstone of what it means to be a member of the Institute. All IREM members are obliged to uphold the IREM Code of Professional Ethics, conducting their professional activities in accordance with the Code.  In addition, firms that have earned Accredited Management Organization (AMO) credentials must uphold the AMO Code of Professional Ethics.

The Codes are designed to protect the public, promote competition, reflect contemporary business practices, and send a powerful message to the marketplace that IREM Members act ethically. IREM says it is one of the very few organizations that actively enforce its Code — violations are processed within a defined structure, including an established peer review process that may result in disciplinary actions.

Chris Mellen, CPM, ARM, IREM president, president, The Simon Companies, Braintree, Massachusetts, states:

The fourteen-point IREM Code of Professional Ethics is the gold standard in integrity and professionalism for real estate managers, and is what has set us apart from the rest of the industry since 1933, and we’re excited to reinforce this message to the marketplace with Ethics Awareness Month.

During Ethics Awareness Month, IREM and its network of chapters will highlight their commitment to ethics and integrity with the release of the second edition of Real Life Ethics for the Professional Real Estate Manager: A Case Study Report Based on Actual IREM Ethics Cases, a Mock Ethics Hearing at the IREM Fall Conference, and a social media campaign that allows memers to show what IREM Ethics mean to them using #IREMethics on Twitter and Instagram.

IREM is an international community of real estate managers dedicated to ethical business practices, maximizing the value of investment real estate, and promoting superior management through education and information sharing. An affiliate of the National Association of REALTORS, IREM serves both the multifamily and commercial sectors. IREM believes good management matters, and well-managed properties pay dividends in terms of value and in the quality of life for residents, tenants and customers. IREM credentials include: CPM, ARM, ACoM and AMO.
