See how you can generate 3D floor plans for maintenance or build-out projects in minutes — right from your phone

by Brianna Crandall — September 10, 2018 — This summer, visual mapping solution provider Indoor Reality announced the latest update to its three-dimensional (3D) mobile mapping solution — IR-200 — a phone-based 3D reality capture system that can be used for rapid, affordable 3D visualization and floor plan generation of buildings and their assets. The new system can be used as a standalone Android or IOS app on mobile phones, or in conjunction with an additional camera.

Founder and CEO Avideh Zakhor remarked:

The new product, IR-200, is a natural progression from our existing handheld product IR-500, and our backpack IR-1000; it provides an unprecedented price/performance capability for 3D reality capture of buildings for professionals in facilities management, real estate, AEC, or anyone interested in 3D visual documentation of buildings and assets.

The company points out that most existing systems are bulky, large, expensive, and take a long time to capture by having to move a tripod around inside buildings. By contrast, Indoor Reality’s wearable devices allow you to map wherever humans can go: staircases, uneven surfaces, attics, interior, exterior, no matter how complicated or dense the space, according to the company’s website. A web-based 3D visualization tool enables users to:

  1. Virtually navigate a 3D space on desktop, mobile, and virtual reality HMDs;
  2. Tag, locate, and manage assets; and
  3. Measure dimensions of scenes or objects accurately.

Zakhor continued:

This device could fit into one’s pocket, is super fast to capture, yet it generates a rich set of data products such as immersive 3D visualizations, 3D floor plans and mesh, in minutes using Indoor Reality’s cloud processing platform. The 3D visualization of the captured data can be used on desktops, laptops, mobile devices, or virtual reality headsets such as Google Daydream. As such it enables architects, general contractors, property owners, and other building professionals to deal with tight schedules of remodeling projects for their customers and tenants.

According to the company, the solution can generate Autodesk Revit building information software (BIM) models three times faster than traditional point cloud based methods.

Asset and facilities management uses

Indoor Reality’s webpage highlighting asset and facilities management (FM) points out that the software can be used to tag important assets such as equipment during acquisition so that they appear in the model, and to attach a maintenance schedule to each asset online to keep technicians updated. The software can be used to plan interior build-out projects; to expedite preventive maintenance, condition assessment and commissioning; and to enhance emergency preparedness for occupants and first responders.

IR-200 is currently available to all customers. Visit the Indoor Reality website for more information.
