by Brianna Crandall — July 27, 2016 — BSI, the U.K.-based business standards company, has verified the first two sub-contractors (Tier 2 organizations) to its building information modeling (BIM) verification certificate program for PAS 1192-2 Information Management for the Capital/Delivery Phase of Construction Projects.
AHR and Harvey Group have both achieved verification from BSI, which provides evidence of their eligibility to supply main contractor services for Level 2 BIM projects. The two companies join several main contractors who have already achieved verification since the launch of the scheme in December 2015, including BAM Construct UK, Skanska UK and Balfour Beatty.
The PAS 1192-2 program was developed by BSI to support the requirement for all government building and infrastructure projects in the U.K. to have Level 2 BIM compliance by the end of 2016. Developed with input from influential industry stakeholders, the scheme aims to help designers and contractors, as well as their supply chains, to provide evidence that they have the capability to deliver projects using building information modeling (BIM).

BIM is becoming increasingly vital for those working in the construction industry, and not just for main contractors but for those within their supply chain also. Organizations must be able to demonstrate how BIM-ready they are in order to be considered for commercial projects both now and in the future. Those main contractors who wish to better manage their supply chain will require sub-contractors to demonstrate their capability to deliver projects using BIM, and we’re delighted to have been able to support Harvey Group and AHR in doing so.
In order to achieve BIM certification, organizations are required to be independently assessed by BSI, whereby they have to demonstrate that they adhere to the requirements of the PAS 1192-2 standard. This includes an on-site audit that assesses the documented procedures and systems for all processes in PAS 1192-2, which also includes compliance with BS 1192 and BS 1192-4, and the competency of staff.
The assessment varies depending on an organization’s role within the supply chain and the Tier. There are many different roles within the supply chain such as structural engineers, architects and contractors, and the information they supply and how this must be managed will vary. These variations are reflected in the certificate scopes that BSI issues.
PAS 1192-2 was designed with input from influential industry experts. The consensus-based standard sets out how to share information on BIM projects, and lists the requirements for Design and Construction BIM Level 2. It makes recommendations for the adoption of industry conventions, challenges project complacency, and promotes consistency and transparency of work processes between parties. PAS 1192-2 is one of the series of standards designed to drive cost savings and efficiencies through waste reduction and improved collaboration.
