2012 GOOD DESIGN awards celebrate innovative product design

by Brianna Crandall — January 7, 2013—The winners of the prestigious annual GOOD DESIGN awards were recently announced by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. The awards cover new consumer products designed and manufactured in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America.

Created in Chicago in 1950 by three architects, Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames and Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., the GOOD DESIGN awards give international recognition for product designers and manufacturers who show inventiveness and originality beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design. One of the main factors for the awards selection is whether or not a product can enrich society and individuals’ lives through its design.

Entries for design and innovation, sustainability, creativity, branding, ecologically responsible design, human factors, materials, technology, graphic arts, packaging, and universal design are submitted annually by various industrial design and graphic design firms working for the Fortune 500 companies.

Product categories represented include: Electronics, Protective Equipment, Energy Systems, Robotics/Bionics, Medical, Furniture, Textiles, Industrial, Building Products/Materials, Environments, Hardware, Floor and Wallcovering, Tabletop, Office Products, Lighting, Commercial Fittings and Supplies, Tools, and Technology, among others.

Landscape Forms’ Larkspur planter, designed by Larry Kornegay, won a GOOD DESIGN award in the Furniture category.
