by Brianna Crandall — November 12, 2014—Of interest to facilities managers promoting sustainability on their higher education campus, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced this year’s Sustainability Award winners at the AASHE 2014 Conference and Expo, themed “Innovation for Sustainable Economies and Communities.” The winners are listed below.
Campus Sustainability Case Study Award winners:
- Best Case Study from an Associate College with 5,000 or Fewer Full-Time Students: University of Hawaii, Kauai Community College for the case study “A Unique Hawaiian Learning Approach to Sustainable Living, Island-wide”
- Best Case Study from an Associate College with 5,000+ Full-Time Students: Austin Community College for the case study “How to Start a Comprehensive Composting and Recycling Program at a Commuter College”
- Best Case Study from a Four-Year or Graduate Institution with 10,000 or Fewer Full-Time Students: University of San Diego for the case study “Turning Trash Into Cash—Sustainable Social Entrepreneurship”
- Best Case Study from a Four-Year or Graduate Institution with More Than 10,000 Full-Time Students: University of Louisville for the case study “Earn-A-Bike Program”
Student Sustainability Leadership Award winner:
- San Diego State University for the San Diego Students for Sustainability program
Student Research on Campus Sustainability Award winner:
- Taya Owens, University of Albany, for her work, “Growth or Decline? The Form and Function of the Sustainability Agenda in Higher Education”
AASHE congratulated the winners, finalists and applicants, and thanked this year’s Sustainability Award sponsor, A Green Ozzi. According to AASHE, this inventive company aims to eliminate the traditional disposable take-out containers in the food service industry waste stream by collecting reusable containers for sanitization and reuse at higher education facilities and other institutions.
The AASHE Conference and Expo is billed as the largest gathering of higher education sustainability professionals and students in North America. Attendees from around the world convene to network and share new innovations, activities, frameworks, learning outcomes, tools, strategies, research, theory and leadership initiatives that are changing the face of sustainability on their campus and surrounding communities.
