by Brianna Crandall — July 8, 2011—Architectural Record has published its annual Top 250 Architecture Firms list based on surveys by McGraw-Hill Construction. Companies are ranked by revenue (in $ million) for architectural services performed in 2010. The publication notes that no response was received from some high-profile firms such as Foster & Partners and Gehry Partners.
Architectural Record says that heavyweights AECOM Technologies and Gensler have secured the number one and two spots, respectively, in the Top 250 list for the fourth year straight. Perkins+Will came in third, its highest position yet, after steadily ascending through the list over the last few years.

The findings show that although several companies are doing well, the architectural profession remains in a slump, with revenue falling since 2008. While a few sectors, such as health care and higher education, show some activity, forecasters do not expect the architectural market to rebound in 2011. Foreign projects are helping to compensate for the loss of work at home for some companies.
Acquisitions and mergers played a part in the list, noted researchers. For example, Stantec shot from 51 to 24 with its purchase of Burt Hill, and will likely rank even higher next year with its acquisition of Anshen+Allen in late 2010.
