AIA and AAH honor healthcare facilities with innovative design

by Shane Henson — August 16, 2013—Healthcare facilities featuring the best of healthcare building design and healthcare design-oriented research were recently recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) with 2013 AIA/AAH Design Awards.

According to the AIA, the awards highlight the trends of healthcare facilities and the future direction of these facilities. The projects that were chosen were said to exhibit conceptual strength that solve aesthetic, civic, urban, and social concerns as well as the requisite functional and sustainability concerns of a hospital. There were multiple winners in various categories.

Category A: Built, Less than $25 Million (Construction Cost)

  • UCLA Outpatient Surgery and Oncology Center, designed by Michael W. Folonis Architects
  • Peace Island Medical Center, designed by Mahlum
  • Adamsville Regional Health Center, designed by Stanley Beaman & Sears
  • The Everett Clinic Smokey Point Medical Center, designed by ZGF Architects LLP

Category B: Built, More than $25 Million (Construction Cost)

  • University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital, designed by Tsoi/Kobus & Associates
  • Palomar Medical Center, designed by CO Architects
  • San Antonio Military Medical Center, designed by RTKL Associates Inc.

Category C: Unbuilt

  • Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in a joint venture with ICME & Tilke
  • Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Advanced Multimodality Image Guided Operating Room, designed by Payette

Palomar Medical Center received recognition for blurring the boundaries between technology and nature.

Category D: Innovations in Planning and Design Research, Built and Unbuilt

  • Rethinking the need for emergency department beds, designed by Lennon Associates
  • Kaleida Health, Gates Vascular Institute and UB Clinical Translational Research Center, designed by Cannon Design

Category E: Master Planning Urban Design for Healthcare Settings

  • Focal Point Community Campus, designed by HDR Architecture Inc.
