American DG Energy installs combined heat and power system at DoubleTree Tarrytown

by Brianna Crandall — August 24, 2012—American DG Energy Inc., a Massachusetts-based On-Site Utility offering clean electricity, heat, hot water and cooling solutions to hospitality, healthcare, housing and athletic facilities, is now operating a combined heat and power system (CHP) at DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown, New York. The revenue value of the agreement to the company is $2 million over the 15-year term.

The highly efficient 100kW CHP system is owned and operated by America DG Energy and is now producing energy in the form of electricity, space heat and domestic hot water. DoubleTree opted for the company’s On-Site Utility solution and will only pay for the energy used, thus avoiding all capital, installation and operating costs.

American DG Energy sells the energy produced from an On-Site energy system to an individual property as an alternative to the outright sale of energy equipment. Facilities owners and managers will appreciate that On-Site Utility customers only pay for the energy produced by the system and receive a guaranteed discount rate on the price of the energy. All system capital, installation and operating expenses are paid by American DG Energy.

The company explains that CHP systems are a cleaner energy option, offering considerable environmental benefits when compared with purchased electricity from the grid. By capturing and utilizing heat that would otherwise be wasted from the production of electricity, CHP systems require less fuel while producing the same amount of energy. Using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) CHP Partnership emissions calculator, DoubleTree’s utilization of a CHP system will reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 403 tons per year, or the equivalent of planting 75 acres of forest annually.

DoubleTree Tarrytown is a 247-room full-service, upscale property and was recently awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award. With the operation of an On-Site Utility, the hotel is now also contributing to the quality of the environment with its reduction in carbon emissions.

American DG Energy supplies low-cost energy to its customers through distributed power generating systems. The company provides institutional, commercial and small industrial facilities with clean, reliable power, cooling, heat and hot water at lower costs than charged by local utilities, through its On-Site Utility energy solutions.
