by Brianna Crandall — May 1, 2013—Among other recent award announcements by the American Institute of Architects (see list at end), the AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) has announced its 2013 COTE Top Ten Green Projects. The winning projects include a range of building types, such as single and multifamily housing, education projects, mixed-use community projects, office spaces and government projects.

The COTE Top Ten Green Projects program celebrates structures that use an integrated approach to architecture, natural systems, and technology to provide architectural solutions that protect and enhance the environment. Entries are judged on their design and innovation, integration with their community, land use and effect on site ecology, bioclimatic design, energy and water use, approach to light and air, materials and construction, long-life considerations, and feedback loops, with their cost and payback analysis and design process taken into consideration this year.

Along with 10 newer buildings that exhibit state-of-the-art sustainability, this year’s COTE Top 10 includes Aidlin Darling Design’s 355 Eleventh Street office and restaurant as the recipient of the first-ever COTE Top 10 Plus award, which recognizes a past COTE Top Ten Green Project winner for superior ongoing and documented building performance. 355 Eleventh is a LEED-NC Gold adaptive reuse of a historic, previously derelict turn-of-the-century industrial building, transformed into a multi-tenant office building with a LEED-CI Platinum restaurant and an outdoor dining courtyard and organic garden.
