American Society of Safety Engineers launches online safety, health and environmental resource

by Shane Henson — November 25, 2011— Building on their mission to protect people, improve business, and safeguard the environment, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) has launched an online database, dubbed the “Safety, Health and Environmental Body of Knowledge” (BOK), that could be very useful for facilities managers, building owners, and other professionals responsible for ensuring buildings are safe.

According to ASSE, the searchable, interactive online database provides competency models, professional guidance, best practices and policies and procedures aimed at supporting the mission and vision for the users’ companies and to help safety, health, and engineering (SH&E) professionals continue their professional growth. Through BOK, SH&E professionals and other users can find papers, presentations, videos and podcasts gleaned from ASSE professional development conference proceedings, practice specialty newsletter articles, ASSE webinars, ASSE magazine articles and thousands of materials gathered from other key sources.

The easy-to-navigate publication contains topic areas associated with ASSE’s practice specialties and safety professionals handbook. These include:

  • Hazard Communication and Right-to-Know
  • Environmental Management
  • Safety and Health Training
  • Workers Compensation
  • Fleet Safety
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Fire Prevention and Protection

ASSE plans to update BOK frequently and to offer new features as technology evolves.
