by Brianna Crandall — August 2, 2021 — The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) has just announced the publication of a newly revised ANSI approved standard: ANSI/IICRC S100 Standard for Professional Cleaning of Textile Floor Coverings (7th edition, 2021).

ANSI/IICRC S100 describes the procedures, methods and systems to be followed when performing professional commercial and residential textile floorcoverings (e.g., carpet and rugs) maintenance and cleaning.

This standard does not specifically address the protocols and procedures for restoration or remediation of contaminated textile floorcoverings. No attempt is made to evaluate the strengths or weaknesses of individual cleaning methods, or to compare or contrast one method or system, equipment, or product, with another.

Professional carpet and rug maintenance and cleaning consist of the following components, for which procedures are described in this standard:

  • Principles of cleaning;
  • Chemistry of cleaning;
  • Construction of textile floorcovering and style;
  • Carpet selection;
  • Soiling and soil management;
  • Carpet cleaning equipment and tools;
  • Methods and systems of cleaning;
  • Safety and health;
  • Administrative;
  • Pre-cleaning and post-cleaning inspections;
  • Spot and stain removal;
  • Residential and commercial cleaning, and
  • Area rugs.

“Special thanks to Vice Chair Norm Maia, our committee members and all who volunteered their valuable time over the past three years,” said S100 Chair Stephen Lewis. “The revised ANSI/IICRC 2021 S100 is full of updated information that will benefit all who choose to use it. The magic behind this revision is that our committee of industry-recognized professionals, with diverse training and technical backgrounds, were able to agree on the cleaning fundamentals of various textile floor covering cleaning systems used to maintain and clean carpets and rugs.”
