ASHE applauds hospitals for slashing energy consumption

by Shane Henson — May 6, 2013—Healthcare facilities around the country that have shown significant results in curbing their energy usage were recently recognized by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association (AHA) as part of its Energy Efficiency Commitment (E2C) program. The program encourages hospitals across the country to reduce their energy consumption by 10% or more over a 12-month period in support of the goals of the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Challenge.

The hospitals, which were recognized by ASHE on Earth Day on April 22, used various strategies to save energy, says ASHE, which outlines many hospital energy-saving strategies on its recently expanded Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals Web site.

Several facilities have been previously recognized through the program for lowering energy consumption and were recognized again this spring for saving even more energy. The E2C program recognizes repeat winners who reduce energy consumption by an additional 5 percent or more.

ASHE recognized the following hospitals for their leadership in reducing energy consumption (amount of energy reduction in parentheses):

  • Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati, OH (25%)
  • St. Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital in Edgewood, KY (25%)
  • St. Elizabeth Ft. Thomas Hospital in Ft. Thomas, KY (10%)
  • St. Elizabeth Florence Hospital in Florence, KY (10%)
  • Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH (30%)
  • Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, WI (20%)
  • Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro, TN (10%)
  • Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN (15%)
  • Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown in Greenville, SC (10%)
  • Memorial Hermann Westside Hospital in Houston, TX (5%)
  • Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, IL (20%)
  • Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, IL (10%)
  • Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, IL (20%)
  • Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL (20%)

In addition to the facilities recognized in April, ASHE also congratulates hospitals recognized in late 2012 and early 2013 for energy savings, including:

  • Baptist Hospital in Nashville, TN (25%)
  • Texas Children’s Hospital-West Tower in Houston, TX (15%)
  • Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center in Sheboygan, WI (15)
  • Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI (15%)
