ASID announces 2011 interior design award winners, Class of Fellows

by Shane Henson — June 29, 2011—The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) presented the 2011 ASID Design Awards at its annual celebration ceremony at the NeoCon World’s Trade Fair. ASID also honored five members who were recently inducted into the organization’s Class of Fellows. The awards honor the achievements of individuals and companies in interior design.

This year’s award winners were:

  • Mariette Himes Gomez, winner of the ASID Designer of Distinction Award: The highest honor that ASID bestows on one of its members, Himes Gomez was recognized for her outstanding design work over a 30-year career and her contributions to the field of residential and commercial design.
  • Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA), winner of the Innovation Award: BIFMA earned this award for its level sustainability standard. level certification is a multifaceted approach to sustainability certification. Based on BIFMA standards, level is a third-party verification program that provides manufacturers with valuable resources for evaluating and communicating the environmental and social impacts of their furniture products, company and processes.
  • AARP, winner of a Nancy Vincent McClelland Merit Award: The AARP won this award for creating the AARP Recession Remodel Room Makeover Contest. This project incorporates universal design and focuses on two homes that were no longer accessible to their aging residents.
  • Dr. Jacqueline Vischer, winner of a Nancy Vincent McClelland Merit Award: Dr. Jacqueline Vischer is a pioneer in the development of an empirical-based methodology to measure the parameters of a building-in-use. She is the author of Workplace Strategies: Environment As a Tool for Work, a practical assessment of the issues and concepts that influence the planning and designing of workspaces.
  • ARZU Studio Hope, winner of a Nancy Vincent McClelland Merit Award: ARZU is a manufacturer that helps Afghan women and their families break the cycle of poverty by sourcing and selling the rugs they weave.

ASID also honored five members who were inducted into the ASID College of Fellows. The title of fellow, the highest honor a member can receive from ASID, is given in recognition of outstanding service and contributions to the Society, the profession and the interior design industry. The new fellows are Joyce Shore, Janice Linster, Sonya Dufner, Jamie Drake and Fran Colby.
