by Brianna Crandall — December 10, 2014—Global security organization ASIS International just announced that the Society honored author Michael Jay Fagel, PhD, CEM, CH S-IV, with its inaugural Security Book of the Year Award. Fagel’s award-winning book, Crisis Management and Emergency Planning: Preparing for Today’s Challenges, was published in 2014.
“The investment of time and talent by book authors and editors is enormous. ASIS has long worked closely with many authors and editors. I felt strongly that there was a need to recognize their commitment and achievement among their peers and within their profession,” stated Lawrence J. Fennelly, CPO, CSS, author and editor of more than 30 security books, who worked with ASIS to establish the award and chair the inaugural award committee.
According to ASIS, Dr. Fagel has more than three decades of experience in emergency management and emergency operations, with careers in fire, rescue, emergency medical services, law enforcement, public health, emergency management, as well as corporate safety and security. He has been an on-site responder to such disaster events as the Oklahoma City Bombing and the site of the World Trade Center in the aftermath of 9/11. Dr. Fagel has published four textbooks on emergency planning, emergency operations, and food safety law. He is an experienced professor, trainer, and consultant and serves as a columnist for several national trade publications, and has appeared on numerous media outlets.
The book delves into this extensive experience to present advanced emergency management and response concepts to disasters not often covered in other publications, says ASIS. It includes coverage of planning and preparedness, public health considerations, vulnerability and impact assessments, hospital management and planning, sporting venue emergency planning, and community preparedness including volunteer management.
Contributions to the book from leading professionals in the field focus on broad responses across the spectrum of public health, emergency management, and mass casualty situations. The book provides detailed, “must-read” planning and response instruction on a variety of events, identifying long-term solutions for situations where a community or organization must operate outside its normal daily operational windows.
Features include:
- Reviews the latest legislation and regulations on public and private sector emergency planning
- Identifies proven interagency and team communication best practices
- Offers real-world examples of planning and preparedness plans in action
- Presents communication and exercise strategies for increased public-private partnerships
- Examines hotly debated topics like the active shooter incidents, pandemic planning, and mass fatality incidents
“This award is a tremendous honor for my colleagues and myself who worked very hard in bringing our third book to fruition. The greatest reward is in the knowledge that our textbook, combined with our collective years of experience, will serve to give back to the community and profession we serve in,” observed Dr. Fagel.
