by Brianna Crandall — December 15, 2010—Standards provider ASTM International has recently released new standards on evaluating and preparing roof membranes for coating application; investigating equipment problems and releases for petroleum underground storage tank systems; and disposing of artists’ paint in smaller commercial or educational settings.
The new ASTM D7120, Guide for Evaluation and Preparation of Roof Membranes for Coating Application standard will guide consultants and contractors in assessing the condition of a roof to be coated and recommendations on how to prepare a roof for coating. Since coating a roof can extend its life and create a reflective roof surface that will comply with industry requirements and save energy, the new standard will promote top building industry priorities of energy savings, environmental preservation and sustainability, notes ASTM.
The new ASTM E2733, Standard Guide for Investigation of Equipment Problems and Releases for Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Systems standard provides a procedure to determine the cause of petroleum releases from underground storage tanks as well as to provide clues that will help prevent future releases. ASTM E2733 will enable inspectors, maintenance contractors, removal contractors, owners and regulators to get on the same page and make appropriate changes, and will help owner/operators decide if retrofitting existing installations is warranted.
The new ASTM D7355, Guide for Artists’ Paint Waste Disposal in Smaller Commercial or Educational Settings standard offers best disposal practice for smaller commercial or educational art studios that may not be regulated by laws or regulations but want to dispose of painting materials properly.
