Avigilon HD surveillance system chosen to boost student safety at Humber College

by Shane Henson — May 22, 2013—Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, has increased the ability of its security personnel to monitor parking lots and high-traffic areas on its three main campuses through investing in Avigilon’s high-definition (HD) surveillance system.

According to Avigilon, a provider of HD and megapixel video surveillance solutions, the surveillance system was chosen for its superior image quality, ease of use, and ability to integrate with other critical security solutions for a complete campus-wide security system that increases safety for students and staff and maintains a positive learning environment.

Humber uses the Avigilon Control Center network video management software with HD Stream Management technology to manage its public safety surveillance system, including a combination of Avigilon HD cameras ranging from 1 megapixel (MP) to 16 MP, and Avigilon 180° HD panoramic dome cameras to monitor the parking lots and other high-traffic areas across the college’s three main campuses.

The college also installed Avigilon HD 5 MP cameras at the campus pub and uses ACC Mobile to remotely monitor the system 24/7. To ease the transition to a full Internet protocol (IP)-based surveillance system, Humber uses Avigilon analog video encoders for improved functionality of its existing analog cameras and stores 14 days of continuous video footage on network video recorders (NVRs).

Avigilon’s HD dome cameras are designed to provide optimal image detail in complete darkness.

Humber also successfully leveraged its existing network infrastructure and analog cameras to save costs and improve system performance, easing the transition to IP-based surveillance, says Avigilon. Utilizing the advanced features of the Avigilon Control Center 5.0 software, the security team can identify events in minutes instead of hours to dramatically expedite and improve investigation results. Users can also easily share footage with key stakeholders.

Avigilon’s management hopes to assist more educational institutions in developing a well thought-out security strategy using its products.

“Delivering superior image quality, advanced manageability, and the flexibility to easily integrate with other systems, the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system plays a critical role in maintaining public order and deterring crime, contributing to a safer, more positive campus environment,” said said Bryan Schmode, executive vice president of global sales at Avigilon.
