BIFM interactive tool shows you how the FM Professional Standards can help you excel in your FM career

by Brianna Crandall — July 24, 2017 — Understanding how the FM Professional Standards can help you excel in your facilities management career is now even easier thanks to a new interactive resource unveiled by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM).

The interactive FM Professional Standards Wheel clearly defines the competences necessary to be a proficient facilities management practitioner at all career levels, from entry level through to senior strategic roles.

Developed by BIFM in collaboration with FM stakeholders, industry experts and employers, the FM Professional Standards form the complete global competence model for all FM professionals, acting as an invaluable tool for all FM practitioners at any stage in their development as well as for human resource (HR) professionals in the recruitment and selection process, and for line managers in assessing performance.

Focused on identifying successful behaviors and processes within the role of managing facilities, the FM Professional Standards can be used as a comprehensive benchmark for developing professionals. Aligned to the BIFM Qualifications and linked to CPD events, they will also provide the framework for BIFM’s soon-to-be-launched new training offering, BIFM Academy.

BIFM chief executive Linda Hausmanis said:

When used alongside BIFM’s membership, training and qualifications, the FM Professional Standards provide the framework for the sector’s most extensive FM Career Development Pathway and can be used to map knowledge, skills and competence to ensure both employees and employers can excel in facilities management.

The FM Professional Standards Wheel, available on the BIFM Web site, is divided into 10 key disciplines and features detailed descriptions of the competences necessary to success within each function. The framework covers roles from supervisory level all the way to strategic roles within FM and is said to be the most effective development tool available for FM professionals to date.

Because of its significance, BIFM has made the FM Professional Standards openly available to all FM professionals to provide a practical foundation to assist in meeting its strategic ambition of continually advancing FM practitioners and the industry. BIFM members can access the full detailed competencies by downloading the FM Professional Standards Handbook from the BIFM site. Non-members can request a copy from BIFM.

A six-page guide to Developing Your Career in Facilities Management is also available under the Professional Development section of the BIFM Web site.
