by Brianna Crandall — March 7, 2014—The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has published a new Good Practice Guide providing practical, how-to guidance for facilities management professionals. The Building Controls and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) Good Practice Guide, supported by the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA), is the latest in a series of new and improved guides to support standards and strategic professionalism in facilities management.
Jacqueline Gillman, product development manager at BIFM, commented, “This latest Good Practice Guide looks at the importance of developing and maintaining strategies for optimizing BEMS and for effective energy management. BEMS offers advanced capabilities for facilities managers (FMs) with many advantages in measuring, monitoring and managing the performance of building services. These combined factors are essential for not only FMs, but also in meeting corporate objectives, as BEMS provide solutions for energy waste reduction and maintenance cost savings.”
The Building Controls and BEMS GPG examines:
- What is a BEMS?
- Getting the most out of your BEMS
- Evaluating your existing BEMS and effectiveness of your current controls
- Define your control strategies
The Building Controls and BEMS Good Practice Guide will help FMs decide whether a BEMS would suit the needs of their facilities, or evaluate any existing BEMS and ensure that they can get the full benefits that the system offers. The guide also offers advice on how to assess the need for possible upgrades of systems.
Good Practice Guides are available for BIFM members as part of their membership benefits. FM professionals who are not BIFM members are able to purchase the GPGs for £19.99.
