Biopesticide Companies Form Alliance

The biopesticide industry has joined together to form a new coalition called the Biopesticide Industry Alliance (BPIA). The mission of the BPIA is to improve the global market perception of biopesticides as effective products and to facilitate the successful registration process of biopesticides. Biopesticides are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Biopesticide and Pollution Prevention Division (BPPD). Biopesticides (also known as biological pesticides) are products derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals. For example, canola oil and baking soda have pesticidal applications and are registered as biopesticides for specific uses. At the end of 1998, there were approximately 175 registered biopesticide active ingredients and 700 products.

BPIA intends to develop industry standards for biopesticides that will encompass:

  • Quality (repeatable manufacturing processes having appropriate quality control procedures)
  • Efficacy (the product works as claimed as supported by statistically sound experimental methods)
  • Regulatory (the product is properly registered by the Federal, State and International Regulatory authorities)
