by Brianna Crandall — May 13, 2011—The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Canada recently announced that the Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) of Canada’s national Building Operator Scoping Study has been published and is available on the ECO Canada Web site. Light House Sustainable Building Centre and Ipsos Reid conducted the research for this study.
The study assesses the state of the building operator profession and the challenges facing the industry in delivering green building performance metrics. It outlines mechanisms to advance the building operator profession, and shows how trained building operators can play a significant role in increasing efficiency and achieving cost and energy savings targets for facilities in the commercial and institutional sectors.
The research identified a number of challenges and gaps within the building operator profession that should be addressed in order to build a strong, qualified and valued workforce for the future. These challenges include a lack of consistent definitions, professional qualifications, and standards, as well as gaps in training and education, and human resource practices.
The report’s findings will be presented at Light House’s Market Insights networking breakfast seminar on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 by Grant Trump, CEO of Eco Canada. A Q&A session following the presentation promises to provide further insights into the state of the building operator profession.
