by Brianna Crandall — November 11, 2016 — Companies certified by U.K.-based building sciences group BRE including contractors, architects and engineering companies were recognized for their deployment of building information modeling (BIM) on major projects at its first BIM Prospects awards. The winning projects demonstrate the versatility and value of BIM. Contractor Interserve was named as overall winner, with HLM Architects, BDP and Wilmott Dixon Interiors all highly commended for their exceptional project delivery. Judges’ comments are below.
Winner: Interserve for the University of Wolverhampton New Business School
This project demonstrated a key feature of BIM, which is about putting the client at the heart of the project, by focusing on the handover of a data-rich asset to help the university in its ongoing management of the building. Through the use of 4D visualization and good collaboration during design and construction, the BIM model delivered real savings through efficiency improvements, and waste reduction. BIM also help improve health and safety and reduce risk.
Highly Commended: HLM Architects for the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and the Department of Clinical Sciences
Large construction projects are becoming ever more complex, and this £150-million project was no exception. The project team used the IFC data format and issued to the Common Data Environment for federation and clash processes, along with the delivery of COBie outputs at project milestones.
Highly Commended: BDP for the East Quad, Dublin Institute of Technology, Grangegorman
A key benefit of BIM is improved collaboration, and this project utilized the cloud-based Codebook database, which the client and design teams were able to access. The inclusion of a design risk assessment within the BIM model provided additional benefits, while the combination of 4D construction scheduling, 5D model-based estimating and 6D environmental analysis demonstrates the BIM model’s versatility.
Highly Commended: Wilmott Dixon Interiors – Place of Safety, SLaM NHS Trust, Maudsley Hospital
This project demonstrates the opportunities that BIM can bring to refurbishment projects. The project used cloud point surveying to create the model, which was used to resolve clashes, while M&E systems were delivered with asset information to help the Clients’ FM team to help in ongoing building management.
The BIM Prospects awards participants had all been certified to BIM Level 2 by BRE Global, the certification arm of BRE Group.
