BRE Global licenses BBA to provide Environmental Profiles certification

by jbs102408 g3 — October 27, 2008—The UK’s BRE Global has signed a license agreement with the British Board of Agreement (BBA) to provide Environmental Profiles certification for construction product manufacturers. The two independent standards and certification bodies are partnering to provide the construction sector with wider access to Profiles certification and to ensure that they present a consistent approach to sustainable construction certification.

BRE Global says its Environmental Profile Certification Scheme is the authoritative standardized method of identifying and assessing the environmental effects associated with building materials over their life cycle, covering their extraction, processing, use, and their eventual disposal.

The methodology underpinning the scheme establishes a set of common rules for applying life cycle assessment (LCA) to UK construction products and a means for presenting “embodied” environmental data which cuts through the confusion of claims and counterclaims about the performance of products, says BRE Global.

BRE Global is now training BBA staff to provide certification services in this area and the first BBA certificates should start to be appear later in 2008. For more information on Environmental Profiles visit the BRE Web site.
