BREEAM In-Use launched to help eco-performance of existing buildings

by jbs040209b — April 10, 2009—BRE Global recently launched its new BREEAM In-Use program to help facilities managers reduce the running costs and improve the environmental performance of existing buildings, which BRE believes is the biggest opportunity to address the UK’s environmental impact.

Sponsored by EDF Energy, BREEAM In-Use consists of a standard, an easy-to-use tool, and a third party certification process that provides a clear and credible route map to improving sustainability, says BRE Global.

The BREEAM In-Use program has three parts, covering:

  • Asset performance—the inherent performance characteristics of the building based on its built form, construction, and services;
  • Building management performance—the management policies, procedures, and practices related to the operation of the building; the consumption of key resources such as energy, water, and other consumables; and environmental impacts such as carbon and waste generation; and
  • Organizational effectiveness—the understanding and implementation of management policies, procedures, and practices; staff engagement; and delivery of key outputs.

A further feature of the program is an easy-to-use online tool to enable users to self-assess their buildings or portfolio of buildings and the operations within them.
