British Institute of Facilities Management honors FM leaders

by Shane Henson — October 21, 2011—The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) recently honored U.K. leaders in facilities management during the BIFM Awards held in London. The awards are designed to celebrate the increasingly strategic profile of FM by highlighting the key role it plays in the success of public- and private-sector organizations.

The 2011 BIFM award winners are:

  • Innovation in Customer Service: Carillion Facilities Management for their approach to customer experience, which goes well beyond the norm and brings something unique to the FM industry.
  • Innovation in Products: Plastic Surgeon for carrying out cosmetic repairs to damaged interior or exterior surfaces, including glass, stone, brick, metal, ceramic, wood and plastic. The repairs save customers time and money and lessen environmental impact by repairing rather than replacing.
  • Innovation in Technology and Systems: The Altius Vendor Assurance system for delivering a step change in the FM supply chain and in the way that clients and suppliers interact. The system reduces risk for clients, reduces administration and introduces suppliers to new business opportunities.
  • Impact on Organization and Workplace: Telefnica U.K. supported by ISS for creating a welcoming, inspiring place to work that was grounded in brand values.
  • FM Excellence in a Major Project: Serco for their involvement in the £300m Forth Valley Royal Hospital, which is the largest NHS construction project ever built in Scotland and one of the most modern and well-equipped hospitals in Europe.
  • Client of the Year: The Co-operative for their continuing journey in delivering value added, innovative and business aligned FM services to the Co-operative family of businesses.
  • Consultant of the Year: EC Harris, a leading international built asset consultancy, for helping clients to make the most from their built asset investment and expenditure by finding ways of getting the most from the money spent on building, operating and owning assets.
  • Service Provider of the Year: Westway Services for their work on the hard services contract for M&S’s 14 general merchandising distribution centers. Westway has, through innovation, individualized the service delivery to each center.
  • Communications and Marketing: HSS Hire for a truly integrated marketing program that has successfully repositioned HSS by showcasing what the firm is really capable of and better aligning the company to their FM customers.
  • Sustainability and Environmental Impact: Modus Services for Project 10, which was conceived and implemented to reduce CO2 emissions from the MOD Head Office Estate by 10% in a year. This is part of the Modus Sustainability Agenda that has achieved successes including zero waste to landfill, 45% of waste recycled, 1.6m KgCO2 reduction and the generation of biodiesel.
  • Judges Special award: PriDE for Headley Court Rehabilitation complex for wounded service personnel.
  • Facilities Manager of the Year: Chris Stoddart of Cushman & Wakefield for his involvement with the Heron Tower since mid-2010. The 755 ft., 46-story structure on London’s Bishopsgate includes offices, retail, parking and a restaurant and sky bar on the top floors. Prior to that, Stoddart was director at Arnage Projects, head of asset management at Cyril Sweett, and also spent more than 10 years in the FM function at Citigroup.
  • Overall Industry Impact: Lionel Prodgers.
