by Shane Henson — November 9, 2012—Brookfield Multiplex, a global contractor that specializes in large-scale and complex landmark buildings, has been awarded a contract to design and construct the highly sustainable headquarters for Masdar, a commercially driven renewable energy company and subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company that is developing Masdar City.
The headquarters is being designed to be one of the most advanced, sustainable multiuse complexes in the United Arab Emirates and will be the cornerstone of Masdar City, the clean-technology cluster and low-carbon city, says Masdar. The headquarters comprises a seven-story, 32,000m2 complex with a community courtyard, connecting offices to spaces to shop, dine, walk, and experience the modern, sustainable lifestyle exemplified by Masdar City. It will also house the [International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which advised on the design of its custom headquarters to meet its organizational requirements.
The Masdar and IRENA headquarters will aim for a Four Pearl certification under Estidama, a building design methodology for constructing and operating buildings and communities more sustainably. It will be fitted with 1,000m2 of rooftop photovoltaic solar panels, and reduce water usage by 50 percent compared to a typical Abu Dhabi building, says Brookfield Multiplex.
Teams within Brookfield Multiplex look forward to beginning construction on the highly sustainable building. “Our innovative strategies and holistic approach will significantly reduce the building’s potable water consumption, energy demand, waste to landfill and embodied carbon emissions from materials,” said Ashley Muldoon, CEO of Brookfield Multiplex Middle East and Asia.
Completion is set for the summer of 2014, according to Brookfield Multiplex.
