by Brianna Crandall — December 8, 2010—BSRIA, the U.K. “built environment experts,” has introduced a guide that explains why it is necessary to account for the embodied carbon in construction and how the construction industry can incorporate it into a design process in order to make informed choices about the materials used.
The Inventory of Carbon and Energy, due to be published January 2011, provides carbon assessment data and demonstrates some of the complexities of making embodied carbon assessments.
In light of toughening European legislation on carbon, the guide aims to prepare a knowledgeable industry in the U.K. to deliver the best solutions to meet whatever targets are required for energy use or for embodied carbon, according to BSRIA.
The report was compiled by the University of Bath and edited by BSRIA. BSRIA is a member organization that promotes energy and water efficiency, best practice in construction and effective operation of buildings through advice, testing, instruments, research and guidance.
