by Shane Henson — March 6, 2013—Camira, a U.K.-based textile designer and manufacturer, has taken the sturdy jeans fabric that began in France as “serge de Nîmes” and is now popular around the globe, and has shown how the versatile and timeless material can also be used to modernize spaces as an upholstery fabric.
Aptly called Denim, the latest launch from the global textile innovator comes in the form of clean, crisp, wool fabric that offers a well-groomed finish perfect for modern interiors, the company says.
Strong and durable, Denim is a twill weave fabric that is constructed by interlacing different-colored warp and filling yarns, creating a diagonal effect on the face of the fabric. Denim meets the A.C.T. Heavy Duty Upholstery abrasion standard, achieving 60,000 double rubs on the Martindale test, and comes with the backing of Camira’s five-year manufacturer wear warranty, the company says.
The classic fabric is available in 18 beautiful colorways, ranging from a light burgundy-colored Denin Cowboy to a mustard-colored Denim Hotpant. In some of the colorations, a soft iridescent effect comes from the interlacing of different warp and fill yarns, giving the fabric a sophisticated and unique look.
The blend of 90 percent pure new wool and 10 percent FR Viscose ensure Denim is inherently flame retardant. Viscose (rayon) is a fiber derived from wood and is classified as a manmade cellulosic fiber, allowing this fabric to be part of the company’s Second Nature brand due to its renewable and compostable attributes.
