by Brianna Crandall — November 17, 2014—CIBSE Certification Ltd (part of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) recently announced that it is one of the first to be approved by the Environment Agency to operate a register of Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Lead Assessors — and already has its program up and running.
As CIBSE explains it, ESOS is the U.K.’s way to implement Article 8 of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, and introduces mandatory energy audits for non-SMEs (small and medium enterprises). It is estimated to apply to almost 10,000 businesses and up to 200,000 buildings in the United Kingdom.
The ESOS Lead Assessor Register has been approved as a subset of the CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants Register, so to become a CIBSE ESOS Lead Assessor, one must first apply to become a CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant (LCC). LCCs can then apply to be assessed for addition to the ESOS Lead Assessors Register.
CIBSE’s major focus is on the energy performance of buildings, reportedly making it a clear choice for a client to use if most of their energy use is in buildings. Clients will also find assessors on CIBSE’s register with experience in other sectors, processes and transport, which means they will find a suitable ESOS Lead Assessor whatever their energy mix, says the group.
CIBSE says that clients can be confident using CIBSE-registered ESOS Lead Assessors, who will need to have demonstrated at least two, and typically more than four years, relevant experience in addition to any qualifications they hold, and are also trained to provide high-quality information.
