by Brianna Crandall — March 23, 2015—U.K.-based CIBSE’s (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) BIM Steering Group, in partnership with a number of industry bodies and professional engineering institutions, has developed a Building Information Modeling (BIM) initiative—Product Data Templates (PDTs)—designed to fast-track the flow of general product information into BIM models.
The first eight PDTs were released for industry consultation in August 2014 and are now available for use. Visit the CIBSE Web site to access the templates and start producing BIM models. The PDTs cover:

- Air grille diffuser
- Heat detector
- Isolation valve
- Luminaire
- Manhole
- Pump
- Radiator
- Smoke detector
Further information about why the PDTs are needed, and how they work, can be found at CIBSE’s BIM site or in the recent CIBSE Journal BIM supplement. Videos explaining the process can be found at BIMTalk.
In addition, a further six PDTs are being made available for industry feedback:
- Cooling coil
- Heater battery
- Plate heat exchanger
- Radiant panel
- Tank
- UV (ultraviolet) sterilizer
The Institution is seeking feedback from the building services sector—particularly trade associations and the manufacturers of relevant products. CIBSE is interested in all feedback and comment, particularly on whether the PDT adequately describes the product type, how easy it is to complete the fields, and whether the complete PDT is sufficient. The deadline for comments is April 27, 2015.
