Cleantech America solar energy company changes name to Meridian Energy USA

by Rebecca Walker — May 31, 2010—Meridian Energy USA, Inc. is the new name for the solar development company formerly known as Cleantech America. The name change further aligns the companys brand with its parent company, Meridian Energy Ltd., says the company.

New Zealand-based Meridian Energy Ltd. acquired Meridian Energy USA’s operations in August of 2009 and has since provided the funding and other resources to complete the companys landmark CalRENEW-1 solar farm in Mendota, CA and expand its project development portfolio in the western U.S.

“With the completion of our first utility-scale solar farm and the expansion of our operations here, it is a natural evolution to create a stronger identification with Meridian Energy Ltd., which provides us with the financial strength and stability needed to successfully build, finance and operate large-scale renewable energy projects,” said Bill Overholt, chief executive officer of Meridian Energy USA.

Meridian Energy Ltd. is the largest electricity generator in New Zealand and generates power only from renewable resources such as wind and hydro.

“Moving into the U.S. represented a very important step for Meridian because we believe expertise in utility-scale solar generation will keep the company on the leading edge of renewable energy development. We believe a closer linkage between our U.S. solar subsidiary and the parent company will benefit our plans to expand our solar investments in California and elsewhere in the U.S.,” said Tim Lusk, chief executive of Meridian Energy Ltd.
