by Rebecca Walker — July 31, 2009 Greenopia, which provides guides and information about environmental sustainability, has researched a publishing a listing of U.S. governors in order of eco-friendliness.
The rankings were compiled based on policies, transparency and interest group ratings, said a Greenopia official. Data was collected from each governor’s Web page and confirmed against other sources.
The governor who topped the list as the most eco-friendly was Bill Ritter of Colorado, followed closely by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California. Under Ritter’s leadership, Colorado has become a hub of renewable energy development and new sites for solar and wind energy are still being pursued.
In California, Governor Schwarzenegger has undertaken include the Low Carbon Fuel Standard, Greenhouse Gas reduction standards, Solar Roof Program, and several resource conservation programs. California’s buildings are about 40 percent more efficient than the U.S. average.
