Take a look at this new technology if you want to save video storage space on surveillance cameras

by Brianna Crandall — August 25, 2017 — Dahua Technology USA, a manufacturer of video surveillance solutions used around the world, has introduced three new network video recorders (NVRs) to provide a more expansive feature set within the company’s Lite Series and Pro Series product families. The N42, N52, and N54 models have a higher number of Power over Ethernet (PoE) ports than their predecessors, and they support Dahua’s popular optimized Smart H.265+ compression codec.

Dahua N54 NVR

The N54A4P 24-channel 1.5U 4K Network Video Recorder (NVR) shown here features a customized live view layout for panoramic displays, and 3D intelligent positioning for Dahua PTZs.

Beyond the newest additions to the family, Dahua offers a comprehensive array of ONVIF-conformant NVRs designed for flexibility, ease of use, and reliability. The NVRs auto-detect Dahua cameras for easy setup and have a single cable connection, meaning they do not need a separate power supply.

The network video recorders can be ordered with hard drives for plug-and-play functionality or without hard drives for greater customization. Integrated PoE ports are engineered to improve network security by giving each camera its own isolated Internet protocol (IP) input. Automatic Network Replenishment (ANR) guards against lost data: in the case of a network outage, the camera records to the local SD card and automatically transfers this footage back to the NVR once the network is restored.

One of the most notable characteristics of the N42, N52, and N54 recorders is that they support Smart H.265+, Dahua’s innovative optimization of the H.265 codec. Using four different technologies to limit the recording of useless or unimportant data whenever possible, Smart H.265+ saves up to 80 percent on bandwidth and storage compared to standard H.264.

Jennifer Hackenburg, senior product marketing manager, Dahua USA, stated:

As video surveillance systems grow in megapixels, Dahua is working to reduce network strain and lower the high cost of storage. Smart H.265+ accomplishes both of these things. It is a great benefit to customers, and we’re pleased to introduce this technology in our Lite and Pro Series NVRs.

Dahua NVRs also improve the efficiency of a video surveillance system, boasting functions such as Smart Search, which allows for fast and easy review of recorded data. When paired with cameras that have Intelligent Video System (IVS) analytics, the NVRs provide a tripwire feature, detection of abandoned or missing objects, and face detection. After faces are detected in the live video stream, the images are captured as thumbnails and a searchable database is created.

Hackenburg also remarked:

The innovation behind Dahua’s family of NVRs really shines, whether with a basic or advanced model. Our goal is to provide our customers with a broad range of network recording solutions, no matter the size or the requirements of the installation. We added these new models to build up our Lite and Pro Series offerings for small and mid-sized applications.”

N42

The new N42 NVRs, part of the competitively priced Lite Series, include 4-, 8-, and 16-channel models that decode up to 8MP resolution on each channel with a maximum incoming bandwidth of 200 Mbps. They support auto-tracking, people counting, and heat mapping — the first time Dahua has introduced such functions in the Lite Series.

N52 and N54

The highlights of the new N52 and N54 models, in the feature-rich Pro Series, are 24 PoE ports and the ability to decode up to 12MP on each channel, with a maximum incoming bandwidth of 320 Mbps. These Pro Series NVRs support recording four channels at 8MP and 16 channels at 2MP. They are especially well suited for panoramic and PTZ cameras, with a customized live view layout for panoramic displays, and 3D intelligent positioning for Dahua PTZs, notes the company.
