by Brianna Crandall — November 8, 2010—Shortly after being named the greenest company on the planet in the “Industrial Goods and Services” sector for a fourth consecutive year by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2010, business-to-business express delivery company TNT has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard to recognize its efforts in reducing carbon emissions across its operations in the U.K. and Ireland.
TNT U.K. and Ireland reportedly reduced its carbon emissions by three percent over the past three years. The company’s global carbon reduction program “Planet Me,” launched in August 2007, encourages employees and suppliers to reduce their energy usage whenever and wherever possible, and has made carbon reduction an intrinsic part of the company’s business strategy.
In building a holistic approach to minimize its impact on the environment, TNT U.K. and Ireland also enlisted the Carbon Trust, an independent body that advises organizations on how to save energy through low-carbon technologies. The Carbon Trust made recommendations in a number of areas and worked with TNT to reduce energy consumption in the company’s buildings across the U.K. and Ireland, identifying 36 improvements, nine of which could be implemented at no cost.
Additionally, the company became the first in its sector to introduce a 51-strong fleet of zero-emission at point of use delivery trucks, which operate across depots throughout the U.K. The vehicles, which have a 70-mile radius on one full charge, are topped up overnight at TNT depots.
