by Ann Withanee — December 24, 2010—Dell has achieved its goal of reducing its desktop and laptop computers’ energy consumption by 25 percent by using a variety of energy efficient parts.
Two years ago, Dell announced its plan to reduce the energy its computers use by a quarter, and some products have exceeded that mark.
For example, Dell’s OptiPlex 980 small form factor and OptiPlex 780 ultra-small form factor computers each use 48 percent less energy than their immediate predecessors.
Dell said it improved the energy efficiency of its computers by using its own Energy Smart fans, circuit design, power management and other technologies, along with more-efficient processors, power supplies, memory and other parts from suppliers.
All Dell laptops are also now made exclusively with LED screens, another goal the company set in 2008. In addition to cutting energy use by 40 percent or more, Dell’s new displays, since they are LEDs, don’t contain mercury and are thus easier to recycle and less toxic when they are dispose.
