by jbs110209 h3 — November 9, 2009—The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently honored 32 individuals, teams, and organizations with Federal Energy and Water Management Awards for outstanding and innovative efforts by federal agencies to implement energy efficiency improvement strategies.
DOE says the awards demonstrate a commitment by agencies across the federal government to save energy, reduce federal energy costs, limit carbon pollution, implement cutting-edge clean energy technologies, strengthen national security, and create a stronger economy for the American people. The initiatives reportedly saved taxpayers more than $26 million in fiscal year 2008.
The 2009 award winners were selected from nominations submitted by 14 federal agencies and included employees from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy; the Departments of Commerce, Energy, Interior, and Veterans Affairs; the Environmental Protection Agency; General Services Administration; and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Accomplishments of this year’s winners include:
- Saving 212 billion Btu through the installation of renewable energy systems including solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, methane gas generated by waste decomposition at the local landfill, and purchasing green power;
- Implementing facility-wide comprehensive changes to operations and maintenance practices saving 558 billion Btu through upgrades to building heat, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, and the installation of high efficiency lighting and energy management control systems;
- Installing significant water efficiency improvements saving 585 million gallons of water through upgrades to water-saving equipment and irrigation systems; conversion to artificial turf; using new, effective methods to locate and repair water leaks; and reusing reclaimed and recovered ground water;
- Building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) facilities with state-of-the-art energy efficiency technologies and clean, environmentally friendly atmospheres;
- Implementing energy savings performance contracts and utility energy services contracts to save taxpayer dollars.
