by Shane Henson — February 20, 2013—The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced the winners of the fifth annual Next Generation Luminaires (NGL) Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition for outdoor lighting.
According to the DOE, the competition was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) commercial lighting fixtures, or “luminaires.” Solid-state lighting, which includes both LED and organic LED (OLED) technologies, reportedly has the potential to save Americans $30 billion a year in energy costs by 2030.
A panel of eight judges from the architectural lighting design community evaluated 120 outdoor lighting entries from 42 manufacturers based on lighting quality, appearance, construction, serviceability, efficacy, and value, says the DOE. The “best-in-class” winners represent four different manufacturers and cover four distinct outdoor lighting areas:
- The Lighting Quotient (West Haven, CT) for its “fraqti Outdoor – Style S170” façade lighting fixture
- Relume Technologies, Inc. (Oxford, MI) for its “OXFORD” decorative acorn streetscape and walkway fixture
- GE Lighting (East Cleveland, OH) for its “Evolve LED Scalable Cobrahead” roadway lighting fixture
- Edge Lighting (Chicago, IL) for its “TV and Dial LED” decorative wall sconces
In addition to the four “best-in-class” winners, 33 additional entries were judged as meeting the stringent requirements of the competition. These recognized winners represented a wide range of manufacturers and applications, including roadway lighting, streetscape lighting, walkway lighting, parking lot lighting, parking garage lighting, canopy lighting, façade lighting, landscape lighting, decorative lighting, and wall-mounted area lighting. Facilities managers seeking to improve their facility’s energy efficiency and support energy-efficient products may benefit from learning more about the winning entries.
