by Brianna Crandall — May 24, 2013—An independent research white paper on saving energy by modifying people’s behavior has been released by Drumbeat Energy Management, a U.K.-based energy services provider that “helps companies and organizations become proficient and self-sufficient in the art of energy management in the shortest practical time.”

In Energy Management White Paper 4: The Drumbeat on Reducing Energy Consumption by Changing People’s Behaviour, Drumbeat opines that contrary to popular belief, the sole responsibility for the success of an energy policy does not rest on a company’s energy manager. The energy manager is responsible to effect and coordinate the various activities required by the policy, but success depends on the “continual active support, commitment and participation of everyone in the organization, from the boardroom down to the most junior members of staff,” says Drumbeat.

Drumbeat promotes the idea of helping each person in an organization become more aware of their energy use, and instilling the concept that energy is a valuable raw material, so that good practice becomes a habit, and each person in effect becomes an energy manager. Drumbeat says that on its own, “successful behavioral change can yield savings as high as 15-20%.” The new white paper offers twelve steps to effective employee engagement.
