Duo-Gard’s LED-based backlighting system offers new shallow box option

by Ann Withanee — May 20, 2011—A new high in energy-efficient illumination was displayed at Lightfair 2011 in May, where Duo-Gard Industries Inc. demonstrated its LED-based Lumenatrix Backlighting System. The system offers the new option of a shallow box that requires only a 3-inch cavity and uses only one-tenth the typical number of LEDs, making it an ideal alternative to current edge lighting.

With low-voltage energy consumption of one watt per square foot, this patent-pending system produces even, consistent, controllable backlighting that’s integrated with translucent glazing materials to create walls, ceilings, partitions, accents, canopies and facades.

Consistent with LEED compliance, Lumenatrix integrates three prime features: high efficiency, design versatility and unique aesthetics. The system’s LEDs have a typical life 5.5 times longer than power-heavy fluorescents and provide consistent illumination without hot spots or shadows. Available for interior and exterior applications, the system cuts maintenance costs with regularly scheduled replacements annually or semi-annually as needed.

Lumenatrix panels are engineered with a structural power rail system and a unique heat sink designed for protection against overheating. Available in large prefabricated panels or small polygon-shaped tiles, Lumenatrix offers glazing choices in translucent acrylic or polycarbonate. The system functions as both true illumination and aesthetic accent.
