See how a new lighting system can collect data about your building to help you gain insight on facility and energy use

by Brianna Crandall — July 17, 2019 — Eaton Lighting, a provider of innovative lighting solutions for connected buildings, homes and communities, recently announced the launch of the Trellix connected lighting platform. Trellix is an open Internet of Things (IoT) platform and infrastructure that connects intelligent sensors to deliver actionable insights through the aggregation of valuable data. This allows building owners and operators in industries such as health care, manufacturing, commercial offices, education, hospitality and retail to improve operational efficiency as well as occupant experience. An on-premise server makes the system easy to use, with no recurring subscription costs or complicated integration, notes the company.

Eric Jerger, general manager, Lighting Systems, Eaton Lighting, remarked:

By providing more data on how efficiently rooms are being utilized, which spaces consume the most energy, and the location of assets or people over time, the Trellix platform helps facility owners and managers make smarter, quicker operational decisions. Developed using a standards-based approach, the new platform is designed for easy integration with other building systems and services to allow data exchange, between Trellix and third-party systems. We currently have approximately 12 million square feet of controlled infrastructure deployed, adding value to end-users.

Leveraging Microsoft Azure IoT services, the platform exchanges data with the Azure-powered cloud portal for big data storage and analytics. The collected data is then used to provide meaningful insight on facility use and efficiency to building owners and operators. Touted as the only UL2900 compliant network infrastructure, Trellix is designed to keep user data secure.

Parth Joshi, chief technology officer and vice president of engineering, Eaton Lighting, commented:

We are excited to be partnering with Microsoft for the Trellix system. The Azure cloud platform, Azure IoT services and Azure Digital Twins, allows Eaton Lighting to focus on innovation at the application level instead of building cloud infrastructure from scratch, combining our expertise to better analyze how space is used and optimize it to better serve the needs of the end user at every level — from energy efficiency to employee satisfaction and productivity.

Said to be unique to Trellix is a new ecosystem of technology partners that optimize the connected lighting IoT platform. Together, Eaton Lighting and each partner will develop seamless and secure joint solutions for connected commercial office buildings, healthcare facilities and senior living accommodations. The four initial ecosystem partners include Johnson Controls Incorporated, Vizzia Technologies, Infosys and M3 Technologies.

The Trellix connected lighting IoT platform leverages Eaton Lighting’s WaveLinx Wireless Connected Lighting System to gather and collect data that can be exchanged with ecosystem partners.
