by Brianna Crandall — March 8, 2013—ARCADIS, an international consultancy, design, engineering and management services company, recently announced that The Jeddah Economic Company (JEC) has appointed a joint venture between ARCADIS subsidiary EC Harris and Mace to project manage the iconic Kingdom Tower project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Kingdom Tower was designed to be the world’s tallest building, standing over one kilometer in height. This will be taller than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and four times the size of The Shard in London.
The EC Harris/Mace joint venture team will provide project, commercial and design management for the $1.2 billion Kingdom Tower development. The integrated team combines the experience of EC Harris and ARCADIS’ Chicago-based tall building experts with international consultancy and construction company Mace. Together they have extensive experience delivering over 100 tall buildings around the globe, including The Shard in London and The Landmark in Abu Dhabi, and are working together on a number of other projects.
With a total construction area of over 500,000 square meters, the soaring Kingdom Tower will be a mixed-use building featuring a five-star luxury Four Seasons hotel, Four Seasons serviced apartments, first-class office space, luxury condominiums, and an observatory that will be higher than the world’s current highest observation deck. Construction work is due to start on site later this year and is due for completion within 63 months.
As the realization of HRH Prince Al Waleed bin Talal’s vision to bring international recognition as well as hundreds of jobs to Saudi Arabia, the iconic Kingdom Tower will be the centerpiece of JEC`s $20-billion Kingdom City development, which will be located to the north of Jeddah, overlooking the Red Sea. The Kingdom City will consist of over 5.3 million square meters of urban development, and it will include residential, commercial, hotel, offices, retail, educational and commercial centers as well as inland water features.
An interdisciplinary team led by Chicago-based Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) created the design of the Kingdom Tower. DAR Al-Handasah was appointed as the supervision consultant, Saudi Baeur as the Pilling Contractor, and Saudi BinLaden Group (SBG) as the main contractor.
