by Brianna Crandall — January 8, 2014—Engineering News-Record (ENR.com) recently announced its national Best of the Best Projects winners for 2013. These awards attempt to identify the highest achievements in U.S. construction projects completed between July 2012 and June 2013.
Around 700 project teams submitted their best work for the original pool, and winners in 19 categories were chosen in each of ENR’s 10 regions. From the regional winners, overall winning projects were selected in each category that scored high in the criteria of teamwork, safety, overcoming challenges, innovation and quality.
ENR’s Best of the Best Projects 2013 winners are:
- Airport/Transit Project: New Tom Bradley International Terminal, Los Angeles, CA; Submitted to ENR California by Walsh Austin Joint Venture
- Cultural/Worship Project and Specialty Contracting Project: Bing Concert Hall, Stanford University, CA; Submitted to ENR California by Turner Construction Co. and California Drywall
- Energy/Industrial Project: The John W. Turk, Jr., Power Plant Project, Fulton, AR; Submitted to ENR Texas and Louisiana by CB&I
- Government/Public Building Project: Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center, Denver, CO; Submitted to ENR Mountain States by Fentress Architects
- Green Project: The Bullitt Center, Seattle, WA; Submitted to ENR Northwest by Schuchart
- Health Care Project: University of Virginia Medical Center Patient Tower Expansion and Helipad, Charlottesville, VA; Submitted to ENR Mid-Atlantic by Gilbane Building Co.
- Higher Education/Research Project: John and Frances Angelos Law Center, Baltimore, MD; Submitted to ENR Mid-Atlantic by Ayers Saint Gross
- Highway/Bridge Project: Spanish Creek Bridge, Quincy, CA; Submitted to ENR California by C.C. Myers, Inc.
- Interiors/Tenant Improvement Project: Arent Fox Tenant Fit Out, Washington, DC; Submitted to ENR Mid-Atlantic by Clark Construction Group
- K-12 Education Project: Sandy Grove Middle School, Lumber Bridge, NC; Submitted to ENR Southeast by Metcon, SFL+a, and First Floor
- Landscape/Urban Development Project: Washington Canal Park, Washington, DC; Submitted to ENR Mid-Atlantic by James G. Davis Construction Corp.
- Manufacturing Project: Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM), Disputanta, VA; Submitted to ENR Mid-Atlantic by W. M. Jordan Co.
- Office/Retail/Mixed-Use Project: The Cay Building, Savannah, GA; Submitted to ENR Southeast by New South Construction Co.
- Renovation/Restoration Project: King Street Station, Seattle, WA; Submitted to ENR Northwest by ZGF Architects
- Residential/Hospitality Project: 8500 Burton Way, Los Angeles, CA; Submitted to ENR California by Bernards
- Small Project (under $10 million) : Phyllis J. Tilley Memorial Pedestrian Bridge, Fort Worth, TX; Submitted to ENR Texas & Louisiana by Freese and Nichols Inc.
- Sports/Entertainment Project: California Memorial Stadium, Berkeley, CA; Submitted to ENR California by HNTB Architecture
- Water/Environment Project: Catskill/Delaware Ultraviolet Light Disinfection Facility, Valhalla, NY; Submitted to ENR New York by ARCADIS US Inc.
The winning projects and the judges will be featured in more depth in the February 17, 2014, issue of ENR. One project from the Best of the Best Projects winners will also be announced in that issue as the Editors’ Choice.
The national Excellence in Safety award is being judged by a specialized panel of safety experts, and will be announced separately.
